Go to start> settings> network connections. Make sure that your Ethernet and wireless connections are enabled. Right click on the connection, choose properties, and choose TCP/IP. Make sure your computer is set to automatically get an IP address. If that doesn't fix your problem try running the repair connection wizard to see if that fixes it.
If you still can't get online, try connecting at another location. If your computer connects, the problem is with your connection. If you still can't connect, the problem is with your laptop and you need to take it to a shop to have them diagnose the problem. It may be your laptop has suffered a hardware failure.

Might be firewall software. Try temporarily disabling your firewall for 30 seconds and see if it works.
Other than that, either your ethernet cable or ethernet port might be bad or disabled. Maybe you can get a wireless card and try logging on from there. I don't know if you have wireless capability (or even if you have a wireless router available) because wireless isn't mentioned.
