Well, well done for starting your first site.
The bad news is that you are not even a quarter of the way there. Building traffic is the tough part.
It requires an abundance of A. Money or B. Great content + lots of quality inbound links.
My advise to you would be to hire a writer http://www.website-copy-writer.com because on the net, content is king. While your writer is writing, you can focus on building up links to your site.
Take a look at this article to get a run down on what is important for great traffic levels.http://www.website-copy-writer.com/googl…
It is basically the recommendations of an ex-google employee for having a successful website.

I’ll just answer the Adsense question. Yes, Adsense is the best way to get started right away, but once you start building some traffic you should supplement with your own ad program. Just put up a page on your site with the ad prices.

There are a number of things that need to be done to generate traffic in large numbers.
I’ll start with a few free options:
Get involved in social networking (like Yahoo! Answers).
Register your site with StumbleUpon.
Write press releases and submit them with links back to your site.
Provide something ‘useful’ to folks visiting your site and encourage them to bookmark your site.
Apply search engine optimization to your site to boost your rankings in the SERPs – this is probably the most important as it is free advertising forever when it is done right!
Paid options:
Yahoo Search Marketing
MSN adCenter
Google AdWords
Paid Link submission (although it is frowned on by Google)
There are a number of 3rd tier paid marketing options as well but click-fraud can be an issue.
I do this for a living so I use a bunch of these tools on a daily basis – hopefully they can help you as well. It will help you with keyword research, website optimization and the like. They are all free internet marketing tools: http://www.ppcforhire.com/semtools.html
