Problems Installing Mac Os X 10.5.4 On An Ibook G4 Ppc?
PPC November 9th, 2009Ok so I’ve just recently upgraded my iBook G4 PPC from Panther’s 10.3.9 to Tiger’s 10.4.11, also upped the memory from 256MB to 512MB of Ram. The DVD installer CD reads “For Mac Computers Mac OS X Install Disc 1, Mac OS Version 10.5.4, AHT Version 3A152 22691-6304-A”. Now I’m assuming since it says “For Mac Computers” that my iBook G4 PPC follows under that since it in fact is an Apple computer even though it is a Power PC.
What is happening is that my computer reads the DVD Installer fine. It asks me to pick a language and continue before installation and I do so, and then an error message pops up saying “Cannot Install This Program” and then it gives me the option to either restart or press ok, and doing either results to nothing except for repeating the installation process.
I don’t know what is going wrong and here are the specs of my machine listed below. Thank you for your time and help!
Machine Name: iBook G4
Machine Model: PowerBook6,5
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.8.7f1

You are trying to use a free Leopard install set that came with another Mac and that won’t work. It will only install on the same version of Mac as it came with. It has hardware specific details in the installer. Apple has designed the installer to analyze your Mac’s hardware to determine if it matches what is available from this install DVD. If it doesn’t match, the installer will stop.
You need a retail Leopard install DVD. Only the retail version has the full set of hardware extensions that can match any Mac that qualifies for installation.
