Website Question?
PPC December 13th, 2009Ok…do the advertisers on websites ( i.e. banners/links ) pay for the ad as more like a monthly fee virtual billboard, or does it work in a more pay per click type manner. I realize there can be both, but generally speaking. Please, serious answers only from people who know.

You really answered your own question as there are both types of advertising on websites. The type used depends upon the website itself. Some websites can use both methods at the same time. Home Depot would not pay to place a banner on Johns small time hardware store, but John may trade off with them and place a banner link to the home depot site for his customers.

it’s been my experience that banner advertising uses mainly a cost per thousand platform. meaning you pay a certain amount per thousand impressions your banner makes. basically every time a site with your banner on it is loaded it’s considered an impression. So if you establish a budget of say $10 per 1000 impressions it will cost you 10 cents everytime your banner is shown.

In my experience they are usually pay-per-click ads, especially on smaller sites. This is often called “affiliate marketing,” when one site pays another site to bring in traffic. There are a lot of programs available that allow you to track leads coming in from other sites, as well as pay out on multiple levels.
